Appliances Wear Out From the Inside

When a dishwasher, refrigerator or steam oven fails early in a Scottsdale kitchen, the cause often starts at the water connection. Scale builds in inlet valves, spray arms, heating elements and small water passages, and the appliance works a little harder every month until something sticks open, sticks shut or stops heating. None of that shows on the outside.

Integration is the part of a remodel where each water using appliance and fixture gets connected to the right supply, with the right valve, filter and settings. Done carefully, it adds years to expensive equipment. Done as an afterthought, it means reaching behind a finished cabinet to fix it later.

Dishwashers

Hard water leaves glasses cloudy and builds a white film inside the tub. Rinse aid helps, and so does a detergent suited to hard water, but the installation matters too.

• Supply line. A new braided supply with its own shutoff, rather than a tee off an old scaled valve.
• Hardness setting. A number of dishwashers let you enter your water hardness so the machine adjusts its cycle or detergent use. We set it from the reading we took at your tap.
• Built in softeners. A few higher end models include an internal softener with a salt reservoir. If you choose one, we show you where the salt goes and how often to check it.
• Drain. A high drain loop or air gap, as the manufacturer and code require, so dirty water cannot siphon back into the machine.

Refrigerators With Ice and Water

The refrigerator’s built in filter handles taste and sediment. It does not soften water, and the inlet valve behind the fridge is exposed to full hardness either way. Small, hollow or slow ice is a common early symptom.

We run a new line in copper or braided stainless with an accessible shutoff, in a recessed outlet box so the refrigerator can sit tight to the wall. If you have a reverse osmosis system under the sink, we can feed the refrigerator from it, which protects the valve and improves the ice. That line has to be planned before cabinets go in.

Instant Hot Water Taps

A near boiling water tap heats a small tank constantly, and heat speeds up scale more than anything else in the kitchen. In very hard water these tanks can scale quickly. We recommend feeding them from filtered or reverse osmosis water, and we mount the tank where it can be reached for service without emptying the sink base.

Steam Ovens and Combination Ovens

Plumbed steam ovens are sensitive to water quality, and most manufacturers publish a maximum hardness for the supply or require a specific filter. We read the installation manual before rough-in, not on install day, because the answer may mean a filter housing mounted in an adjacent cabinet and a line run through it. Ovens with a refillable reservoir instead of a plumbed line are simpler, but still need regular descaling.

Pot Fillers

A pot filler on the range wall is convenient and needs its own cold supply run through the wall. Because it sits unused for long stretches, its valves can stiffen from scale. We install models with serviceable cartridges and add an accessible shutoff so it can be isolated without turning off the kitchen.

Softener Loops and Water Treatment

Many homes in the Valley have a softener loop stubbed out in the garage, whether or not a softener was ever installed. Where one exists we can confirm which kitchen lines are on the softened side. Where the household wants the kitchen tap left unsoftened for drinking and cooking, we keep it on its own branch. If the remodel moves the sink or adds fixtures, this is the moment to sort out which water goes where.

Electrical That Goes With It

Appliances that heat water need dedicated circuits in most cases, and new outlets near the sink need GFCI protection. An induction cooktop or a second oven may also mean checking whether the panel has the capacity. We handle the electrical side with the same planning, and pull the City of Scottsdale permit when new circuits are involved.

Outdoor Kitchens

Many Scottsdale households cook outside for much of the year. Outdoor sinks and ice makers face hard water plus heat and dust, and a line that sits hot in the sun all afternoon scales faster. We plan outdoor supplies with shutoffs that can be reached easily and fixtures that can be serviced in place.
